25th anniversary - and a story

Couldn't let today go by without acknowledging that 25 years ago today I entered the accounting profession. An elder in the church had linked my love of numbers (tho total lack of any accountancy experience), with the desire of a newly converted member of the church to bring Christian principles into his business practice. And so Nick and I began six years of working together, also brought to mind when Nick rang a couple of weeks ago from New Zealand having just heard our news, to share his care and prayer. Another example of those Body of Christ relationships that transcend time and geography. It's time I told you another "God story", so click on the comment below to read how God demonstrated His love in a major business decision.

90 mins at hospital this afternoon for routine "PICC line care". 90% would describe my physical health today.

  1. Nick was partner in two businesses, the one industrial engraving, the other stove enamelling (paint and cook), operating out of cramped premises in Easton. 50% of the paint business required production to stringent quality conditions, which were somehow met in fairly dingy premises, exposed to all the dust of the surrounding neighbourhood. The need a clean room, a complete stem to stern unit that allowed washing of incoming parts in solvent, spraying in an enclosed room, with fumes extracted, dust excluded, and drying in clean ovens.

An ad in the trade press advised of a firm in Exeter that had gone into receivership, had such a room (30’ x 15’ x 10’) list price £33,000 (1985 prices – 3 times the capitalised value of the company), buyer to dismantle and collect. Sealed bids to be sent to receiver.

Nick asked how much I thought he should bid – my reply along the lines – “ this is just the sort of thing that God delights to bless us with – you need to ask him.” ( I personally did not have a clue, having little understanding of the industry)

Our bid went in for £750 (post a comment Nick if you remember how you came up with that figure!!) – and we won. One can only imagine the chagrin of the receiver who had clearly chosen the wrong technique to maximise his sale price (pre E-Bay you understand) – and the greater chagrin of no doubt many others who had considered the beast and were daunted by an assumed high price and the resulting cost of re-location – I guess they never knew what they’d missed, I’m sure there were scores who would have offered £751!!

As the hymn-writer puts it, “Got any rivers you think are uncrossable, got any mountains you can’t tunnel through, God specialises in things thought impossible, He can do just what no other can do.

Just ask him, - but you may need to wait quietly for the answer. Dave Myerscough

  2. Think you need to write a whole lot more of these - I know you have plenty of experience! Then you could consider putting them all in a book. After hitting the bestsellers list for a few years it might even turn up on the sale shelf of the local christian bookshop in 20 years time!
